Based on Tove Jansson’s beloved novel, *The Summer Book* tells the story of Sophia, a nine-year-old girl who is growing up fast, and her grandmother, who is nearing the end of her life. Together with Sophia’s father, they spend time at the family’s summer house on a tiny, unspoiled archipelago island in the Gulf of Finland. They explore the island, talk about life and nature—but not about their feelings regarding the death of Sophia’s mother or their love for one another. But by the end of the summer, they are closer than ever before.

Together with their three children and their family dog “Panda,” Anna and Magnús lead a quiet life on Iceland’s vast coast. Magnús, whom everyone calls Maggi, is often out at sea for days on end as a deep-sea fisherman, while Anna hopes to make her breakthrough as an artist. In between, they hike in the mountains with the children, go ice fishing on the lakes, ice skate, shoot archery, pick blueberries, or watch wild horses and whales. Yet Anna and Maggi broke up quite some time ago. Yet somehow, the two of them can’t seem to separate their lives from one another. Is it just for the sake of the children, or is there perhaps still some form of love that remains?
