This year, as part of our "Silent Film with Live Music" series featuring the brilliant pianist Uwe Oberg, we will once again be screening several films that are turning 100 years old. Incidentally, so is our cinema: it will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in December, at the end of the year.
We kick things off with a lighthearted romantic comedy that blends dramatic moments with elements of parody. In the story of shop girl Toinette, who rises to become a model for a famous Parisian fashion designer and eventually falls in love with a king fighting for his throne, Marlene Dietrich appears in a tiny supporting role as a courtesan: If you look closely, you can see the great actress in one of her earliest screen appearances.

A film from the rights collection of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau Foundation.

Director: Alexander Korda
Screenplay: Ludwig Biro
Cinematography: Fritz Arno Wagner

"The film as a whole is a very polished, thoroughly refined work. An entertainment film whose narrative is defined by its elegant style, its brilliant presentation, and a highly dramatic conclusion." Lichtbild-Bühne, 1927
